About Us

Diablo VB Icon

Diablo Valley Volleyball Club is a non-profit serving young athletes in and around the Walnut Creek and Brentwood areas. We provide boys and girls the chance to improve volleyball skills, build confidence, and enjoy the game.

For over 30 years, we have consistently focused on our core club principles:

  • Provide a friendly, family-like atmosphere where all players feel supported by coaches and staff.
  • Develop players' volleyball skills and knowledge in a positive and competitive environment.
  • Promote values of good sportsmanship and develop important life skills.
  • Coach, encourage, and motivate each team and player to improve to their greatest potential.

Under the leadership of Sean & Teresa Stratton, our club has grown with dedicated families, committed coaches, and athletes who work hard and improve every season.

Diablo Volleyball is a member of USA Volleyball (USAV) and the Northern California Volleyball Association (NCVA), and follows their rules and Code of Conduct.

Sean Stratton

Sean Stratton

I have been involved in coaching sports since I was 14 years old, when I began helping my dad coach my older sister’s softball team. I have always had a passion for coaching and sharing my experience with others. I have been coaching volleyball for over 30 years now and have worked with all levels of play, from beginners to advanced athletes, ranging in age from 8 to 60.

I have had many successes in coaching, and not all of them have come from winning games. One of the greatest rewards is when a player finally understands what I am asking them to do. They will look over towards me with a big smile, and in that moment, we both know what has just happened.

Coaching Philosophy
My main goals for the players I coach are to help them improve their volleyball skills, build confidence, and develop strong communication skills.

I have my degree in Physical Education from California State University, Long Beach. I have incorporated many of the concepts and principles I learned through my studies into my coaching.

I have always liked this quote, which I share with all my teams: "There is no limit to what can be accomplished if it doesn’t matter who gets the credit."

Thrilled and amazed at how Diablo has continued to thrive over the last 30 years. We are so blessed with coaches, athletes and families who are committed to working hard and giving their best effort to make their Diablo volleyball season enjoyable and fulfilling.
I used to be able to name all 75+ campers in our summer sessions on Day #1 - now, I can barely remember my 30 third grade students’ names at the end of each school day - ha, ha! Sean fills me in on all the teams and it is enjoyable to still watch and cheer on teams at tournaments. Although, I am no longer coaching a specific team - I am available for observations with feedback. I am willing to come to practice to watch and take notes with comments and suggestions. If you are interested, please email us at diablovbc@yahoo.com with your practice day/time/site and player name. I will watch some of the practice then send notes to you via email afterward.
Volleyball has been such a positive outlet for me as I grew up with volleyball as the focal point of my own life as a player, coach, director and then as a volleyball parent. What brings me real joy is to see and hear the excitement on the courts. The Diablo athletes are fired up about learning and improving their game of volleyball while also having the opportunity to meet others who have the same passion for volleyball and there are many who build lifelong friendships.
Thank you to all the players, coaches, parents and many others that have been a part of building this fantastic quality and caring program, Diablo Valley Volleyball Club!!

Head of Boys Division

Hayden Zollars

Hayden Zollars

Diablo has been a part of my life for nearly two decades. I started playing club volleyball here in 2008 and continued through 2013, while also competing at Deer Valley High School, where I earned BVAL First Team All-League honors and was named Team MVP my senior year. I went on to attend Sonoma State University, where I played four years of collegiate club volleyball and served as Women’s Club Volleyball President and Team Captain, helping lead the team to win the 2018 NCVF Division II National Championship.

Today, I’m proud to give back to the same club that helped shape me as a player. As Diablo’s Boys Program Coordinator and Digital Content Manager, I help oversee the growth of our programs while also managing the club’s website and social media. I have also spent over 9 years coaching athletes of all ages and levels.

As a coach, I strive to help each athlete reach their fullest potential by improving their volleyball skills, expanding their understanding of the game, and building their confidence. My goal is to create a positive and supportive environment where players are challenged to grow, achieve their goals, and develop a lifelong love for volleyball, just as I have!

Lead Coach Mentor

Ron Smith

Ron Smith

Ron Smith returns to Diablo Valley Volleyball Club with more than 16 years of coaching experience and a deep connection to the program that helped shape his volleyball journey. Known for his passion, energy, and commitment to athlete development, Ron has built a reputation for helping players reach their full potential while creating competitive, team-first environments that foster confidence, accountability, and a lifelong love for the game.

Over the course of his coaching career, Ron has helped athletes and teams achieve success at the highest levels of club volleyball. He has coached multiple National Championship qualifiers and has helped numerous players continue their careers at the collegiate level. Several former athletes have gone on to become successful volleyball coaches themselves, including coaches at the NCAA Division I level.

As a player, Ron competed for Diablo Valley Volleyball Club's 18-1 team during the 2001–2002 season. That team finished ranked No. 1 in the NCVA, and Ron was one of only four players selected to the NCVA All-League Team. He later continued his playing career at Newman University, where he led the NAIA in blocks per game for two consecutive seasons, helped his team reach the 2004 NAIA National Championship Match, and was later inducted into the Newman University Athletics Hall of Fame.

Ron also spent three seasons on the Diablo coaching staff and was part of the historic 2014 Girls 18s coaching staff that earned the first National Championship bid in club history for a Diablo girls team. Returning to Diablo Valley Volleyball Club is a true full-circle moment, and he is excited for the opportunity to help develop the next generation of Diablo athletes.
